Our History & Mission
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) was established in 1934 and is the apex body for badminton in India. Headquartered in New Delhi, we are registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, with Registration No.: U74999DL2010NPL200123. Our mission is to develop, promote, and regulate the sport of badminton throughout the country, from grassroots to professional levels.
BAI is affiliated with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). We oversee national tournaments, select national teams, and implement coaching programs. Over the decades, BAI has produced world-class players like Prakash Padukone, Pullela Gopichand, Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu, and Kidambi Srikanth, who have brought glory to India on international platforms.
Our vision is to make India a global powerhouse in badminton by 2030. We focus on infrastructure development, talent identification, and international collaborations. With state associations in all 28 states and 8 union territories, BAI ensures nationwide participation.

India Open Super 750
Part of the BWF World Tour, this premier event attracts top global players. Held annually in New Delhi with prize money of USD 850,000. The 2024 edition saw participation from 25 countries.

Coaching & Development Programs
Grassroots to Glory
BAI runs structured coaching programs across India to identify and nurture talent from a young age. Our National Coaching Scheme includes:
- BAI Academy, New Delhi: A high-performance center with world-class facilities, offering residential training for elite players under foreign and Indian coaches.
- State-Level Camps: Regular training camps in each state association, focusing on technical and physical development.
- Coach Education Program: Certification courses for coaches in collaboration with the Sports Authority of India (SAI). Over 1000 coaches trained annually.
- School Outreach Initiative: Introducing badminton in 5000+ schools through the 'Shuttle Time' program, in partnership with BWF.
We also provide financial assistance through the 'BAI Player Support Fund' for promising juniors and para-badminton athletes. Our sports science wing includes physiotherapists, nutritionists, and psychologists.

BAI Announces New Centralized League for 2024

The Badminton Association of India unveiled plans for the 'Indian Badminton League' (IBL), a franchise-based tournament scheduled for November 2024. The league aims to bring together international stars and domestic talent, with eight city-based teams. BAI President, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, stated, "This league will revolutionize badminton in India, providing a platform for young players and engaging fans." The total prize pool is set at INR 5 crore. Broadcasting rights are under negotiation with major sports networks.

Indian junior shuttlers clinched two silver and one bronze medal at the BWF Asia Junior Championships held in Jakarta. The U-19 team, coached by BAI-appointed Sanjay Mishra, displayed exceptional skill. The Badminton Association of India signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to develop 50 new synthetic courts across rural India. The project, funded under the Khelo India scheme, will cost INR 200 crore and be completed by 2026. BAI Secretary, Ajay Singhania, said, "This initiative will make badminton accessible in remote areas and help scout talent." The courts will be equipped with lighting and seating facilities.
